Climate Change Triggers Refugee Crisis in the Developing World
3Ceco.com ASIA - The People's Republic of Bangladesh in South Asia is one of the most populated countries in the world, experiences high poverty rates and unfortunately - sits atop the low lying Ganges Delta which makes it particularly vulnerable to the increasingly visible results of global climate change.
Most parts of Bangladesh sit a mere 12 metres (49 ft) above sea level and most agree a slight one metre increase in ocean levels would sink 50 per cent of the country's land mass and put the vast majority of its 150 million population on the run as climate change refugees seeking higher ground in neighboring India.
For the country's coastal farmers they've already had a front row seat to experience the West's carbon dump into the atmosphere as development and poverty are now met with rising ocean levels that have contaminated their irrigation systems. With salt water introduced to the water tables the rising saline levels make it impossible to farm, drink or cook with the water.
As one of the most populous nations in the world, the citizens of Bangladesh are already on the move - heading to urban centers and with their newly minted status as climate change refugees into neighboring India, as the developing world braces for the new normal brought on by global climate change.
